High Pressure Compressor Performance for Demanding OEM Equipment

Thomas articulated piston compressors are designed for applications where conventional piston technology may struggle with operating pressure, long run times or harsh environmental conditions.

Straight-up and straight-down piston motion is particularly well suited to delivering high-pressure, high-volume airflow and allows the compressor to stop and restart while the discharge remains under pressure.

The oil-less design eliminates lubricant contamination from the compressed-air stream, while the robust mechanical construction makes the technology suitable for mobile, industrial and outdoor OEM systems.

How a Thomas articulated piston compressor works
Operating Principle

How Does an Articulated Piston Compressor Work?

An articulated piston compressor operates using the same basic reciprocating principle as an engine piston. Rotational energy from the electric motor is converted into straight reciprocating piston movement within the cylinder.

1
Motor Rotation The electric motor drives the compressor crank mechanism.
2
Intake Stroke As the piston moves downward, air enters the cylinder through a one-way inlet valve.
3
Compression Stroke Upward piston movement reduces cylinder volume and compresses the trapped air.
4
Discharge Compressed air exits through the one-way discharge valve into the downstream pneumatic system.

How Articulated Piston Pumps and Compressors Work?
The articulated piston compressor follows the same operating principle as a conventional car engine piston. The articulated piston transfers rotational energy from a motor into a reciprocating motion used to compress air in a closed cylinder. As the piston moves down inside the cylinder, the air is drawn through a one-way intake valve. When the piston moves up, the air is exhausted through a one-way exhaust valve. The construction of this positive air displacement pump protects it from even the harshest environmental and heavy-duty application conditions.
